Architecture culture operates along axes, which sometimes run parallel and sometimes cross each other. Traditionally, these axes have been defined and dominated by male figures. In the post-war era however, a number of female architects, but also critics, curators, philanthropist, cultural agitators, and so on, started to emerge in the architecture culture of the metropolis, navigating their way along these axes while shaping them. Looking at the personal and professional trajectories of two trailblazer born in the 1920s - critic Ada Louise Huxtable (1921-2013) and architect, curator, philanthropist, activist, Phyllis Lambert (1927 - ) - this lecture argues that using histoire croisée and feminist theory might shed new light on the urban and architectural agency of professional women during America’s postmodern turn.
